New York is undefeated when it comes to sandwiches. The bagel sandwich, baconeggandcheese, the chopped cheese, and any deli sandwich are all being perfected by 8.5 million people every day. The reason they have all that trash on the sidewalk is from making so many sandwiches.
Anyways, I decided to make a bodega classic. It’s kinda like a cross between a burger and a Philly cheesesteak. It’s delicious and extremely easy to make. Typically, it’s served on a hoagie roll, but Erica wanted Brioche and she was the one who actually made the grocery run so she got to decide. You can chop your onions in the skillet, or if you do not have a steel spatula, you can just chop them before they go in.
Ingredients:
3/4th lb of ground beef
1/2 of a small onion, finely diced
4 slices of American cheese (I used kraft singles)
2 cloves of garlic, chopped or minced
Iceberg lettuce leaves
Tomato slices
Olive oil
Ketchup
Mayo
Seasonings: garlic salt, pepper, italian herbs
Directions:
Heat up a thin layer of olive oil on medium-high heat.
Dump your chopped onions into the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until they start to sweat.
Add your beef and use the end of your spatula to chop up the ground beef with the onions. Top with your garlic and seasoning, then cook for another 3 minutes until your beef has browned. If you wanted to cook it a little longer so you can get a bit of char, I won’t tell anyone.
Reduce the heat to low then place your cheese slices on top of the meat and onion mixture. Leave them on there long enough that they start to melt.
Cover the top bun with your mayo and ketchup. Use a spatula to lay the meat/onion/cheese mixture onto the bottom bun. Top with an onion slice and a tomato (unless it’s for Erica then skip the tomato).
Serve with chips or French fries!
Annoyance Rating (1-10): 3
Once you’ve prepped your veggies, the hard work is done. Almost all the work is done at that point honestly. Plus, you can chop the onions in the skillet like a maniac if you want.
Erica’s Review:
“I had never heard of a chopped cheese before, and when Jake described it as a mix of a Philly cheesesteak and a cheeseburger, I was on board immediately. This chopped cheese sandwich was so incredibly delicious. Like hamburger helper but 1000x better and on a sandwich. 10/10 would eat again.”
